This may be the most rave review I will ever write. I read through this 165-page book within 24 hours the first time around, and immediately read it two more times. You might not identify with the book as much as I did, but you will certainly gain a great deal from reading it.
The story is fiction, but the principles are not. The Great Connection talks about four basic personal styles that people tend to fall into (with variances). Understanding your own personal style can help you to understand why you relate to people the way you do. Being able to recognize others' personal style can help you understand why they react to you the way you do. You can then adjust accordingly in order to more effectively relate to those around you.
The story is set in St. Louis, MO. Bob Hathaway is a popular radio personality with a 20+ year successful career. Now, at the radio station who hired him because they liked his personable, friendly style, the manager wants him to change his whole format to become a controversial radio personality. This goes against Bob's whole style and personality, as he thrives on getting along with others and being liked. Bob goes to a peaceful place to contemplate the bad news, and there meets an elderly doctor who will help him change his whole life.
The man teaches Bob about personal styles and helps him to work through his problem. Unfortunately he dies before being able to teach Bob about the fourth personal style. Bob figures it out himself because the elderly man was the fourth style. Through a surprising turn of events, Bob gains the courage to become even more successful than he could have ever dreamed. But I'm not going to give any of that away.
I think this is one of the greatest books ever written. Buy it, find out what else happens, and learn how to connect with anyone--especially yourself.
