Hooray For Now

Viva Voce

Cadence

Here's a nifty new band with luscious female vocals.  Essentially, the band consists of Anita Robinson on vocals and guitars, and Kevin Robinson on drums and guitars.  Additional musicians listed are Wade Jaynes on bass guitar and Matt Slocum on cello.

The album starts off with "He Touches Stars," a song praising God for all His attributes.  Next is  "Fear of Flying," which seems to be about people pleasers afraid to strike out and be themselves ("you're just afraid to fly, anyway.  You're still afraid to try.").  "Closer than Far" is a nice slow atmospheric song.  "Heartstring" is faster-paced and reminiscent of the band Driver Eight. "Shining in My Shoes" is more driving and makes you want to dance around.

Highlights of the album are "Shining in My Shoes,"  "Closer than Far,"  "He Touches Stars,"  and "Beautiful,"  not to mention the ending track "Color Wheel."  Not a bad song on the album.  The more I listen to it the more I like it.

Comparisons probably go to Veruca Salt and other female vocal bands that seriously rock.  Don't get me wrong.  Viva Voce is not a "Veruca Salt" copy.  What we have here is a mixture of driving rock music with oh-so-smoothe vocals.  Also very reminiscent of Hum.  I would make comparisons also to Starflyer 59 due to the sometimes slow-driving atmospheric feel in some songs.  This is one of those albums that I bought, listened to once or twice, and then forgot about.  Once I picked it up again and listened to it again, I was hooked.  Some of my fave bands have been that way, such as Starflyer 59 and Luxury.  Viva Voce has captured my attention, and I think they'll catch yours too.
